99' XJ: Slowly Going Down Under.

Fantastic build! It's easy to get carried away with giant lifts and spending thousands on huge, often unnecessary gadgetry. It's great to see a clean rig that's thoroughly appreciated.

That's the way I look at it. For what I do right now, this height and suspension is perfect for all my needs and is mildly capable. Thanks for the comment!

The way I see it, if you can't drive there without a tube buggy and 50 inch tires and rear steering you probably don't need to be driving there at all.

But those buggies sure are cool!

I had the coolest experience yet with a CraigsList transaction. I had a spare tire that I was selling up in Wilsonville, OR. Upon arrival, the buyer was wearing an Overland Journal hat. I made a quick comment, asking if he was/is a subscriber and he replied, "yes". He then goes on saying that the company that he works for actually works with Overland Journal occasionally. Of course, I had to ask who. He says, "Warn". My jaw dropped. We got to talking an it turns out this guys name is Andy and he is the Internet Marketing Specialist for Warn. An instant connection was made and the 4x4 ramblings begun. Andy answered a few questions of mine about Warn, as well as some more information on their new VR Series. It was a pleasant experience, and went as a reminder to me that when that time comes for a winch (hopefully soon), it'll be a Warn winch. Andy represents his company very well and came off as a very genuine guy. Thanks again for the chat Andy!

Andy ended up snapping a few photos of my Jeep and when Warn's news feed came up on my FB, I had to do a double-check lol.

Got off I-5 and decided to take the backroads home. Not a bad decision after all...

saw it and gave it a thumbs up when it came across my feed!

Thanks! The first publicity for my Jeep lol. Speaking of, I happened to skim your profile and i've seen you post several times on ARB's FB page... I really dig you XJ, especially that gorgeous ARB Bumper that I envy.

Read this thread from page to page and I'm really wanting to make a similar build.. Now just time to save up for the OME 2.5" kit.. and I think in a 30x9.5x15 flavor.
Great XJ!

Great XJ!

Thanks buddy! I actually just saw your thread posted. If you follow out with what you want to do, you and I are going to have almost the identical XJ lol. You will be beyond satisfied with OME 2.5" and 30s.

It's pretty amazing what all the Jeep will go over with just 30" tires and rear locker. The limit I really faced with my ZJ was Approach and Departure angels. With the Cherokee and a high clearance front bumper it will really take me anywhere.

Awesome write up as well

Absolutely. I would love to pick up an ARB Air Locker right about now, but i'd rather wait until I bump up it to a 255/75/17s on 17x8.5 AEV Pintler Beadlocks :). I also feel like the XJ suits my needs quite well and I can't imagine myself in any other vehicle right now. Thanks buddy!

All of my parts came in this weekend. A similar thread will be done, hopefully Sunday.
Make sure to post a thread so I can follow... Can't wait to see the progress.

Ah, so I am getting tired of my current wheels. Although they are purdy and look good my XJ, I want something more bland that has a more original "expo" feel to for it. Because of that I have decided to pursue a set of 15x7 OEM Sawblade wheels. Switching from aluminum to steel will gain me a little more weight, but I like the the look a lot more, plus you can beat on a steel wheel if happens to bend, as apposed to a aluminum being done-for.

To mix it up a little more, I want to paint them in white or flat gray. Here is a pic on JF I found with a similar set-up that I want.

Thoughts?

I like the simple look of those wheels. Painted white would match up with your jeep very nicely and would look like the jeeps built when I was young, where white wagon wheels were the thing.

Also gives you another tire option in the BFG AT at 33x9.50. Would be perfect on that rim and would limit the modifications needed to run 33's since they would tuck nicely into the wheel wells, I believe.
Nice work.

I know it will look great! :clapsmile A 33x 9.50 is a perfect match for those rims on a XJ. Buddy of mine has that setup and he loves it. It's to bad you don't live in Colorado cuz you could have my old steelie wheel set for free.

Same here. I was walking downstairs the other day and hit me that I was no longer fond of my current wheels. I want to transition back to a more original look and I think these wheels will certainly achieve that. Thanks for the input John!

That's what i'm thinking! I wish I lived in Crawlorado. Beautiful scenery and endless wheeling... plus a possibly free set of wheels.
