The Mahindra Thar 2-door has been out for a couple of years now and anticipation has been high for a 4-door version. Mahindra released the 4-door today (it's Indian Independence Day BTW). The 4dr model isn't called the Thar, it's called the Roxx. I'll let the intro video and photos speak for themselves.

My wife and I are still talking about bringing a Mahindra Savari over to the US and putting it on an LJ frame and mechanicals. It's a longer body and longer overhang than the Marshal in my most recent post so even better as an overlander.

What years were they manufactured?
One they're 15 years old I could bring one into Canada whole. Hmm.

The Savari was produced from sometime in the late 80's or early 90's (I believe) up until about 2010. The first versions were had full bodies but around 2005 Mahindra offered a removable top version and options included a full soft top and a removable hardtop.

I've got a book on Mahindra jeep history covering most of the models made, here are a few pages from that book on the Savari.

I've got photos of all 3 versions of the Safari (full body, removable hardtop and soft top) if anyone wants to see them.

In the US the rule is 25 years and you can bring one in, so right now anything up for 1999 would be eligible. I want a full body version, so I can bring one of those in as long as it's 1999 or earlier.

I'm thinking that the 4.0 would be straining with that heavy of a body.
Let's check the specs... from the book pages I posted above, the 4wd Savari kerb weight is 1770 kg (3902 lbs.) and it's powered by a 4-cylinder diesel generating 59 horsepower and 150 nm of torque (110 ft. lbs.)

The curb weight of a 2006 LJ with a hardtop is is 3850 lbs. and it's powered by a 190 hp inline 6 generating 235 ft.lbs. of torque.

So the LJ is within 50 lbs. of the Savari with over three times the horsepower and twice the torque. No problem there.

Let's also look at my Wrangler pickup. The wheelbase of the Savari is 2900mm (114 inches). The extended wheelbase of my pickup is 123.5", so there's more frame weight of the pickup to consider. The pickup curb weight is 4200 lbs. (the frame extension and bed mostly are the extra lbs.) I've never felt that the pickup is underpowered, and I regularly carry heavy loads in the bed or tow my trailer with enough cargo to push the trailer over 2500 lbs.

I think a Savari with on LJ frame stretched to 114" will be just fine, both on the trail and on the highway.

Even with it's small diesel, the Savari does very well in rural taxi service in the foothills of the Himalayas, it's not uncommon to load 20 people in/on one in taxi service.

And they do pretty well on the trails too, even with the not-uncommon bald tires in rural use in India, check this one out:

I think a 4.0 powered Savari on an LJ frame would be the perfect overlander. My wife continually encourages me to import one and convert it. Maybe Dan and I should each import one and save on the container costs :).

I need to see how much one of these would cost to import. I'm also curious how much is interchangeable with Jeep. I like your idea though @jscherb, A body swap to something more modern underneath would prove much more bearable for daily driving. There are plenty of donor JKs that could serve well.
