I have to stop reading this....
making your own vent out of scrap walnut? Really? Any hope I had of building something in my rig went out the window as all I will be thinking is "Paul Jensen would do this better", "Paul Jensen would make his own hinge to use here" or "Paul Jensen would have hand sanded that so much nicer"

Just kidding, I know that my work will never be at this level, but I am grateful to be allow to follow along watching a master craftsman and see WHY things are done a certain way.

Mike and Paul,

You guys have to put a stop to this - it is not good for my health!!! Every new post on this build thread is leaving me gasping for air  :Wow1:

I don't think there are words to describe the amazing skill, dedication to detail, patience and hardwork that you guys are putting into this peice of machinery that is more aptly described as a WORK of ART.

Not to worry though - I have 911 on my speed dial if I start turning blue.:)

I see your point, but it's hardly possible to stop now. We've got to keep going at least until that cow skin Paul bought gets turned into a place to sit. :cow:

Seriously, thanks to everyone for the ongoing compliments. Paul and I appreciate them very much.

Paul, quick question - don't want to hijack the thread completely... I know you add 25% denatured alcohol to your epoxy mix when wanting a good soak into raw wood - would you suggest adding Tung Oil at that point as well if one wanted a deeper color? If so, any limits on how much? Or oil first and epoxy over? That Zebra wood looks fantastic! I want to give one of my projects a deeper tone, but also get the waterproof aspects too. TIA!

Are you still looking for some brass screen? We weave decorative screen out of all kinds of materials at work and I could probably snag a piece. What size is the vent hole?

I like to use thinned epoxy on the wood that is mostly hidden...The cases (in and out, front and back, top and bottom), the drawer pull outs all around), and the back of the wall panels...

The raw drawer faces and exposed panels get Tung Oil...It flows great, polishes out easy and has a good reputation for water resistance and touching up scratches is as simple as it gets...

Thanks for the offer...

The black screen is fine, maybe next time...

Thirty-Six...

Thirty-Six...

Prepped then installed the driver side drawer faces, then oiled and sanded them, repeatedly...

Today, the pictures will speak for themselves...

You're right about the oil, that looks great!
In my experience, hot glue can soften in a hot car. I learned that the hard way during one of SoCal's hot summers.

Doesn't get that hot in the Great Northwest. Sticky glue, velcro and suction cups seem to work up there :) Down here everything just falls off the walls :) :)

I noticed on the back side photo of your drawer fronts that the little blocks you have added to the front are actually morticed in. How did you do this and how do you get the 'slots' for this and your slide locks to be square? Is it as simple as router and chisel?

Like everyone else here, I'm totally blown away by your design ideas, the engineering behind it all and the beautiful workmanship you are showing on this build. Truely educational and inspiring stuff.

Thank you.
