path clearing

I carry a machete, works great for clearing brush and can be made to work on everything up to about 4 inches in diameter but gets to be a lot of work. I choose this tool instead of a saw because its way faster on little stuff. It also works great for firewood.

I don't carry an axe, there's just no reason to where I roam. I do carry a bow saw. I have only used it a couple of times.

What I have used more frequently is a set of loppers. They're about 24" long and CORONA advertizes that they will prune branches up to 1 1/2". They are great for trimming branches that encroach the trail and reducing trail pinstriping. They are handy around the fire for preparing fallen limbs for the fire pit too.

Axe, Machete, cliipers and Stihl chain saw in my rig. Trails here get tight and overgrown in a hurry. Plus with all the storms we get gobs of down trees.

i thought of either loppers or just pruning shears but though you guys would think it a bit foo-foo

I carry a smal bow saw and an ax.
If there have been a lot of recent storms I also take my Stihl 038.

To increase the use of my chainsaw I've been thinking for years about getting a Lewis Winch.
But since I've been "thinking" about it for around 20 years, I'm guessing I probably won't. :xxrotflma

I carry a small axe, large axe, machete, and loppers. Never had to use any of them for path clearing though. Not usually too much problem in the desert.

It all depends on where I am going since the available terrain varies>

I have actually used my bow saw and hatchet for small tree falls. I only occaisionally use a machete or pruning shears. Sometimes a prybar and shovel are needed for the trail itself rather than clearing brush from it.

I usually have the axe, hatchet and machete in the rig I'm driving.

If I'm heading out on the forest roads, I bring the chainsaw.

I lent my bow saw out, and it never returned:snorkel:

But for just getting a tree clear of the trail, a bow saw works great most of the time.

Axe, clippers, and a bow saw. Never really tested how much I could cut through, but small branches are no match for it.

About 8 years ago, an old roommate of mine left behind a What-A-Saw, which looks like a gimmick, took up no space and has virtually no weight. So I threw it in my truck for "just in case". I think it was designed for backpackers. Well, I've cut more wood with that thing than I care to remember. Cleared trails, cut firewood, etc. I've even used it to prune trees. I grab it before my hatchet or axe.

here is a 3 part pic: folded up, unfolding, open for use

This is one of my "don't leave home without it" items.
