Not exactly the same thing, but an iPhone performance app that looks interesting.

There were two connectivity solutions at the show to connect iPhones to the OBD port.

This one, which is wired, provides charging current to the iPhone to keep the battery on the phone charged.

There is also a WiFi solution that provides a wireless connection between the iPhone (and any other WiFi enabled device) and the OBD port.

There are also a variety of applications available for the iPhone & Windows to monitor / graph / etc. the data available in the OBD port. In addition, some of those applications augment the OBD data with other telementry, e.g., GPS, accelerometer data, etc.

We plan to cover one such iPhone application in more detail in the next issue of OJ.

can anybody give more information on that stroker Jeep Cherokee XJ? I'd love to see more photos and a description!

There seems to be a lot more "expedition" type equipment this year based on the photos. Could someone at SEMA please elaborate on the overland equipment/outfitting presence at this years show compared to last year.

I thought the "expedition" type equipment was definitely larger than years past. There were definitely a lot more roof-top tents, trailers, etc. this year too. Of course that's just my totally unscientific opinion. It's also nice to see real, usable 4WD vehicles on display as well, particularly in front of the halls. SEMA has traditionally been about the 'bling' and in the truck world, that's meant ridiculous, over-the-top vehicles that can barely traverse a city street much less the type of terrain we encounter. The past few years have signaled a change back to more rational, usable vehicles, that in turn, are a lot more interesting to "normal" people who might be able to use ideas from these trucks on their own.

One interesting trivia note: I've been going to SEMA about 12 years now and you rarely ever see a vehicle make a 2nd appearance at the show. A few, but not many. The one exception to that comment is an overlanding vehicle - the Turtle Expedition rig(s). I believe one or the other has been there every single year I've attended. Good stuff doesn't go out of style.

To give a small example of the growth of expedition vehicles at SEMA. In the tire and wheel area, I have never seen a roof tent. This year, there were four. I counted no less than 30 RTTs at the show.

That is great news. Function is pushing bling a bit to the side :)

I just got home from doing the after show "tear down". Its the first year I have worked any shows. Needless to say I will be looking to get some passes for next year. Hopefully I can get some. Funny my brother in law used to own a motorcycle performance company and used to invite me every year. And every year I said no. Man was I a dumb ***!!

Many thanks for everyone's input to this thread. Absolutely awesome. Now I can get back to actually eating food in our lunch break instead of drooling in front of the computer with the other guys from work all this week. Very much appreciated.

Regards John.

There were plenty of over-the-top customs at SEMA,
like this tube buggy running Rockwell axles and 44 inch tires

and this lineup of trucks. Lower a ladder so I can climb aboard!

But they were not at center stage. The overland travel motif
was more prominent in the truck and suv hall. The emphasis
this year was on sensible, salable products, not flights of fancy.

Anyone look at these more? (Edit: The tire, I'm talking about the tire. The black and green thing.. The other thing. On the left!!)

Sometime around 1998 Michelin showed a similar product and I thought it was only time until air filled tires were done. I still think that's correct, but the amount of time appears to be quite a few more years at least.

They were originally used on light equipment like cat or john deere mini loaders, I'm not sure if they ever made it but I saw them a while back being marketed for that use.
