Transmission-powered Expedition Trailer

I have no experience with powered trailers, but looking at the pictures posted or linked above, the Volvo system looks much more robust than the LandRover system.

The most common powered trailer I've seen around the 'net is the Hagglunds BV 206. Isn't that a Volvo design? They seem to be a very good vehicle.

A little update...

The PTO trailer has been put on the back burner for the time being. I removed the Laplander's entire body this past spring to find that sections of the frame were non-existent. Now that the truck is in molecules I plan to install the neccessary PTO parts for the trailer anyway.

You can see what is going on here:

Good luck with your restoration; I can see on your web site that ever now and then, you have a very cute little helper. Nice if the entire family gets involved in projects like this.

:) This is my daughter Linnéa, age 6. She LOVES the truck! It has become our father/daughter project.

This past spring I broke the right-side CV-Joint for the second time. We were stuck out in the woods as the we could only swing to the right. A friend and I jacked up the truck to remove the drive-shaft so we could get home. I was really frustrated and said to my friend that I was going to sell the truck. I then heard tears and crying from passenger' seat. It was Linnéa... When she collected herself she said: "Pappa, I want you to promise me that you leave the truck to me in the papers you write for when you die! It took me a second before I realized she ment my Last Will and Testament".

My friend and I chuckled a little and I told her that she had a lot of work ahead of her in that case, Linnéa is now with me in the garage every second she gets.

Hehe. My five-year-old is also very upfront about her plans for when I will die. Cute and slightly disturbing at the same time!

Nice story! And? Will she get the truck later on? :coffeedrink:

I hope to. The only thing that would change this would be Linnéa herself. (If I need to change my will because she wants us to sell it for a Land Rover then she can pay for the extra fees involved) :D

OK! I just can't bring myself to put the PTO powered expedition trailer on the back burner.... IT WILL JUST BE WAY TOO COOL!

I was at my friend's house the other day of whom I am buying the trailer from. He had parts and documentation to the project I need.

So now while I am renovating the Laplander from the ground up I can mount and build everything in place. For one the trailer's brakes are vaccum steered so I have some hosing to run from the engine to the trailer.

The only real part I am missing now is the smaller PT case that connects the back outlet on the rear bumper to the PT case that sits together with the trucks regular gearbox.

Hmm... I could see such a thing creating problems. You wouldn't want it pushing the vehicle and jack knifing. Wouldn't it be good to connect the trailer with a viscous coupling or some kind of torque converter so that it's not locked with the vehicle axles and only gets a limited amount of torque?

It will be interesting to see to. It is a system/set-up that that has been used many years and I have not seen any documentation concerning jack knifing. Maybe because the trailer mounts on the truck are so wide? The red lever is mounted next to the driver seat so should it be a problem it is just to disengage it. Should it start jack knifing it isn't anything that will happen fast as it is only receiving power when in low gear while off-roading. So when you are driving on the highway it is only "tagging along" like a regular trialer.

The axel of the trailer has the same gearing, limited slip differentialas the truck. The power transfercase case and the tire dimensions are also the same.

Great that you decided on trailer too! I've heard about them, but never seen one. I have a friend who has a 1981 C202 standing at my shop and we have a TGB13, so, as you know, I have some interest in the Volvo's. I'm looking forward to seing your build-up!

Just got back from the Heritage Motor Center in the UK where I saw the only remaining prototype of the UK military power driven trailer (they say).

I took a load of pictures and video of it. I should be able to get the pictures posted today or tomorrow with video next week.

Very interesting unit.

COOOOOL!

I can barely wait to see them! Martyn please PM me and let me know how you made out with Mud Stuff. I might need some help with my build....

Would you mind sending me your pics to tedd(at)visionxoffroad.se so I can study them in detail?
