I have been very pleased with the AT3's in 285/75/16 on our Xterra. It's heavier than an LJ but we travel pretty light so I know we haven't been much over 5000# loaded.
I run 35-40 PSI on the highway and lowering to 25-30 softens things up noticeably when off the pavement. I have not found...
I have one of these and I love it

Probably the lightest option around. Not quite a chair (you are sitting on just two legs) but IMO more comfortable than the ultralight chairs with 4 legs that I've tried out. It goes on every...
I would also vote for this. I finally got around to doing one on my Xterra and don't know why I waited, it was easy and I spent under $15 for all parts.
There are so many cool projects in this thread!
Mine is very simple, not really a roof rack, just some crossbars.
It's strut channel bolted to some vibration damping ubolts. You can attach just about anything to it and it's low profile, hardly visible at all.
I have since added a third...
I'm also interested in learning more about ownership experiences with this style of trailer. At 6'4" I would love to hear about any that are taller than average. It seems like the published interior heights are sometimes optimistic and aren't always real world numbers.
Thanks, more info here if you want it:

Are the Frontier bars the same diameter as the Xterra? If so you could use the same hardware I did, if not, McMaster Carr probably has one that would...
Looks great! Can I ask how you mounted the Quickfists to the crossbar... are they just bolted directly down in the channel? I have a somewhat similar setup on my strut crossbars on an Xterra, but I bolted the Quickfists to 1/4" channel nuts so they sat a little higher.
Just looks like some heavy duty zip ties and a cable lock in this picture:

This is specific to an Xterra, and uses unistrut crossbars, but some it could be useful for general purpose Rotopax roof mounting.

I don't know much about 1st Gen Xterras, but that strikes me as a lot of $ for a 16 year old 2WD one.
I think this is the place for 1st Gen info:

ETA: Sounds like XterraNation.org is more active, and I should probably not comment on 1st gen pricing since I...
True about the lower PSI smoothing out the ride, it does make a big difference!
My wife loves traveling backroads, but "offroading", not so much. Anything that feels a little tippy or off camber, or shelf roads, that's what freaks her out. That's more what I'm trying to avoid :)
We have a stockish (just tires and some armor) OR Xterra, and a Subaru Outback. We'd take the Xterra in this case.
My wife's tolerance for rocky and off camber is low, so mainly making sure it would be worth the drive up from the south. Thanks!
As a few other have suggested I would shop around for a 2nd Gen Xterra. FWIW a year ago I paid $8900 for a single owner 2006 Off Road with under 90K miles.
What kind of range do you get from the car now? Are you sure you need extra fuel? I have carried fuel inside the vehicle with a Rotopax with no leaks or detectable odor but it's not ideal and not generally recommended. On my 08 the 4 gallon Rotopax fits nicely across the back of the rear seats...
Lots of good suggestions here; I am not sure how useful a Hi Lift would be for a Subaru though. Not exactly a lot of lifting points.
Do the current gen Outbacks have any decent recovery points? A hitch would probably be the only really strong one. I have owned a 97 and 08, but we rented a...
