Land Rover Ideas for Grenadiers

Roof Rack Overload

How much is too much? I'm pretty sure this is :).

RoofRackOverload.jpg

Forgive me for deviating from Land Rovers for a minute... the photo above reminds me of seeing sights like this on the road in India:

PikUpLoaded.jpg

Or what would you think if you came up behind something like this?

StrawLoad1_zpsgojzb4qz.jpg

It's a Mahindra jeep carrying a load of straw and it's a common sight in Rajasthan. The loads overflow the bed and hangs down the sides as well as being over the cab.

StrawLoad1a_zpsir0zujnx.jpg

This is a different one, right after I snapped this photo the driver of the truck stepped on the gas and the front left wheel came off the ground.

Sorry for the off-topic Mahindra photos but Land Rover drivers have nothing on overloading compared to Indian Mahindra drivers.

Sam Watson's column on overlanding in Land Rover Owner magazine often has good ideas in it. I highlighted an idea in one of his columns:

SamWatson1.jpg

This is the magnetic utensil rack he's talking about:

IkeaRack1.jpg

I mounted one of those on my fridge a long time ago (even before seeing his column). You can see it in this photo taken at the Easter Jeep Safari Vendor Expo in 2019 when MORryde borrowed my Jeep for the booth to show of their Trail Kitchen:

MORryde1_zpse4bjwfq8.jpg

To mount it on the fridge I removed the front handle from the fridge, drilled holes in the magnetic bar so I could bolt it to the handle holes in the fridge and bolted it in place.

This is the other rack Sam mentions in his column. I haven't come up with a use for it in my vehicles yet.

A collection of Sam's columns put into book form would make a great overlanding info book.

Raptor
I've used Raptor for quite a few projects, but never on plastic flares. Sounds like the guys at Land Rover Owner magazine like it for that application:

This could be useful in a roof top tent:

RTTUSB_zpsghxuxesp.jpg

The company's web site says the product is currently unavailable and searching didn't turn up any other sources.

When we camp I often run a 10' USB cable from the outlet in my dash up into the tent; adding a clip-on outlet inside the tent would be handy. Sorry the only photo of it I have is with one of my Jeeps:

Magnetic Screens

A short "how to" article.

WindowScreen.jpg

It appears he's just using magnetic strips to hold loose window screen in place. I did a similar thing for my JKU Wrangler a few years back but I sandwiched the edge of the screen between the magnetic strip and webbing and sewed everything together. Also he put the screen on the inside, I put mine on the outside.

They can be rolled up for storage:

The magnetic strips do a good job at holding them in place - I ran around town with the window open and the screen in place, topping out at around 50mph and had no problem with the screen staying in place, although screens do make some wind noise at speed. They'd probably stay in place at highway speeds, although that's not really what they're intended for.

I tried them on the Grenadier but because of all the aluminum the only place they work is on the cargo area side windows, and since they don't open there's no need for screens there.

MagneticScreenTest.jpg

I suppose they could be made with blackout cloth instead of screen for people who want to sleep inside their Grenadier or keep the sun out, but it would probably be better to devise something that works on the inside of both the cargo area fixed windows and the door windows.

I'll call this Land Rover Idea for a Grenadier a fail.

One thing both Land Rover and other overland people have in common is a fondness for jerry cans. This was in a holiday gift guide in the magazine:

HipFlask.jpg

I found them at a military surplus place in Pennsylvania a few years ago and I couldn't resist buying a couple. I tried some fun photography with one:

They fit nicely in a pouch on my Wrangler roll bar:

I checked the surplus place web site and they still sell them: https://colemans.com/stainless-steel-jerry-can-flask

Haven't found a good place to keep one in the Grenadier yet.

Another idea from Sam Watson's column:

Hammock.jpg

Seems like an interesting idea so I went to the company's web site (they're a U.S. company BTW) and I couldn't find the "Roadie" product he mentions listed, so maybe it's discontinued, but I did find the instruction sheet:

Many military Land Rovers have tools on the bonnet. I don't think I've yet seen tools mounted directly to the hood of a Grenadier. The one in this next photo has a shovel, a pick and a recovery strap on the bonnet - one end of the strap is already hooked to the bumper for quick deployment.

This could be useful on a roof rack, perhaps as a source of warm water after it got heated by the sun?

SwissWaterBladder_zpsquwbewhp.jpg

I did some searching and found that they're available at Amazon: https://tinyurl.com/7fb9pbhk

I bought one and created a pump-driven shower I called the "Power Shower." It works pretty well.

I can post more details about the Power Shower if anyone is interested.

Another detail about converting the bladder to the shower source...

That bladder has a cap/nozzle that's not very useful for use as a water source to a sink or shower, so I modified the cap to have a quick-disconnect. This is the nozzle as it comes, it's got a push-button valve on it and a spout that doesn't lend itself to attaching a hose:

SwissArmyBagNozzle.jpg

Modified, the stock spout and valve is removed and replaced with a quick-disconnect fitting:

CapInstalled2.jpg

In action:

The water flow is very good but I thought it would be a bit more satisfying shower if it had more pressure, which is why I built the "Power Shower" I posted about above.

Another water bladder was recently featured in the magazine:

FrontRunnerWaterBladder.jpg

At about 7 gallons, it's a little longer than the Swiss Army surplus one I've been experimenting with. Here's a link: https://www.frontrunneroutfitters.com/en/us/water-bladder-27l-kit-bag-plus-inner.html

Seems like it would make a good warm water source for a shower (or warm water for washing dishes?). If there's extra room on a roof rack, a simple tray with some straps would make a good place for it. Some concept images:

WaterBladderTray1.jpg

WaterBladderTray2.jpg

When full it would weight 59 lbs., that weight up top could be a consideration for some Jeeps.

What about submitting a design idea to OO, for the L track, that incorporates mounting holes inline with inner structure for the Grenadier?

OO is a fabric goods company, they really haven't done hardware yet and probably don't want to. I could submit a product design to MORryde, but they probably won't be interested based on the small number of Grenadiers out there so far.
