I had a response written but I withdraw it. Like most vehicle specific topics, this one has turned into a pissing contest.

Strap22: Interesting to get your input from a 4th gen owner. Over on the 4runner board where I post (t4r.org) sentiment is running about 70/30 against the new 4runner because it doesn't offer a V8 or a multimode 4wd system.

I believe the reason there is so much antipathy to the 5th gen 4runner on that board is because the majority of people on the board are 4th gen 4runner owners.

Interestingly, the 3rd gen 4runner owners (like me) tend to like the 5th gen.

Everyone always wants to justify their expensive toy. The fact is that the 2010 4Runner will be a best of breed vehicle, and excellent for overland travel and moderate trail use.

The only thing the Rubicon separates is the skill and resolve of the drivers. The trail is not that hard - at all.

I have found most, if not all, 4th gen and Land Cruiser owners are either impressed, excited about the 5th gen or they at least feel it's an improvement. If they have reservations, they are willing to wait and see.

The only strong negativity I have been reading has been on this forum.

That's par for the course. I remember when the 4th gen came out, there was a lot of negativity. I remember Scott Brady bagging on my '03 but he and a lot of others changed their tune once they drove the 4th gen.

I totally agree with Strap22, this 4Runner looks to be the best since the solid axle days. I'm really impressed with how they upped the ante and listened to owners.

If I wasnt so far into my Tacoma build, and so happy with it, I would be all over this.

I will be watching though as we may need a new "family" vehicle in the next couple of years... :coffeedrink:

Then you need to lobby to get the 3rd row seating as an option in the TE package. When that happens I have more ammo for negotiating with the keeper of the purse strings.

I find myself checking this thread every hour throughout the day hoping that someone will post an image of one of these upfitted by ARB. I know that I am jumping the gun, but the excitement is building.

I went to the dealer about a week ago to see if they might have some information on this thing, no surprise they did not. I think i knew more about it than the dealer did but, if you look at the toyota website is has all the information of the 5th Gen on there. As i have previsously stated, having owned two 3rd gens and my parents owning a 4th and put several miles on each, I CANT WAIT to drive this new one with the V6. Yea a V8 would be nice but since ive never driven one with a V8 i can deal with the V6. I know that when i get back to maryland the dealer should have one on the floor and i will be test driving one. I may not buy one in the near future but i have to know, and hey maybe id like it so much that i had to sell the 3rd gen and buy this one. Just my penny worth of thoughts.

There's comparatively little negativity on this forum regarding the 5th gen 4runner compared to this one:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/forumdisplay.php?f=85

Biggest gripe over there seems to be the lack of a V8, which is funny to me because IIRC most of the 4th gen 4runners had V-6's anyway.

The majority of the members over there seem to be more into "bling" than anything else (ie, HID kits, stereos, 20's, And of course, V8 power for the str33tz). No surprise they do not like the new 5th gens.

Just fill her full of gas and point south ;)
I wish that was all I needed to do to my rig!

I emailed Toyota to see what colors the Trail Edition is available in...so far I have seen black, silver and red. Hopefully the blue color is available in the TE. It could be the replacement for the periwinkle mobile. Especially if they put the 6 Speed manual tranny in it.

Not to mention the HP and MPG increase from 4th to 5th while the engine didn't change (4.0).

I noticed that as well. Quite a few 2wd 4runners on that board, too.

Out of curiousity: When was the 4runner first available with 2wd?

The first 2wd 4runner I saw was around 1996-97 at a Toyota dealership in North Carolina. I was working security and one of the places I had to patrol was a Toyota dealership in Charlotte. As I was walking through the dealership one night shining my flashlight in the Toyotas, I passed by a 4runner and when I looked inside, I thought it was odd that there was only an automatic transmission shift lever on the center console - no T-case lever. I thought that was strange and so I looked under the front axle and lo and behold, no axle shafts or differential! :Wow1:

I thought to myself "Why would anybody want a 2wd 4runner?"

And then I thought "Shouldn't they call it a 2runner?" :sombrero:

FWIW I have never seen a 2wd 1st or 2nd gen 4runner.

(Or maybe I have and they just don't look much different? But I've never heard of one either, as in a message board posting that goes "I have a 1989 2wd 4runner" or "I have a 1994 2wd 4runner...")
