Land Rover Ideas for Grenadiers

An issue of Land Rover Monthly has an article about this Defender that's been all over - Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. One thing I found interesting that could also be useful on expedition Jeeps is this external storage box. It mounts to the side of the top and appears to be about 6" deep.

The box looks custom built; it wouldn't be hard to build something like this to fit a Grenadier. Could even build it from plywood and shoot it with bedliner for a finish.

Ideas for Quartermasters...

The Winter 2022 issue of Land Rover Monthly features this HiCap pickup on the cover:

Kingsmen1.jpg

It's outfitted for shooting, and has two drawers in the bed with a nice wooden floor above the drawers.

Kingsmen2.jpg

The right side drawer is for guns and the other is for drinks. I never thought guns and alcohol really went together but maybe in the U.K. they do :)

A couple of interesting things...

On either side of the drawers are power outlets - on the left 240vac outlets (the standard in the U.K, bottom photo) and on the right side (top left photo) are 12v outlets and a battery monitor.

The top left photo above shows a repurposed fuel filler bezel with air and water connections. It's also visible in the first photo in this post.

Another idea for Quartermaster people who might want to sleep in their truck bed:

MosquitoNet.jpg

Just one problem, the Quartermaster bed is so short; I guess you'd have to sleep with the tailgate down for extra length. Or maybe just the kids could sleep there.

Wouldn't be difficult to build a frame for a canopy like this and sew the canopy and mosquito net for a Quartermaster.

Another one for the Quartermaster folks:

Featured in several of the Land Rover magazines, an idea I haven't seen in the Jeep world - an arched rear tonneau cover.

archtonneaulrm-jpg.801713

All of the ones I've seen so far are flat. This one comes with a frame to provide the arched shape; flat ones are simpler because they don't need the frame, but this one claims to be more waterproof because water can run off the sloped sides rather than pool up in the center. It also offers increased storage because it's higher off the floor of the Jeep.

What do you think of this idea?

I doubt this will catch on, but it is from Exmoor Trim, which is one of the leading Land Rover accessories companies in the UK.

From Land Rover Magazine:

The web page for it: https://www.expedition-equipment.com/product/universal-tunnel-saddle-bag/

Not sure if it's a good idea or not, but it's easy enough to turn this into an idea for the Grenadier. I sewed a quick prototype using a couple of Ikea pouches I had on hand to see how it works. It was literally a 10-minute project to sew the two pouches onto the straps. It's probably a bad idea so I'll just unsew it and use the pouches for something else:

Since I was a subscriber to Land Rover Monthly magazine, I get regular emails from them about events, new products, etc. This past weekend a new product email came in, and this camper interior for a Defender 110 was featured. It claims a 30-minute install time, so it could be installed just for a camping trip and be removed after the trip. From the company's web site:

Defender Camper System that installs in less than 30 minutes.

Defender Camper System that installs in less than 30 minutes.

A camper system for your Defender that allows you to keep your middle row seats without making alterations to your vehicle.

The Weekender is our flagship launch product developed with you and our mission in mind – to enhance your Defender experience by giving you immediate access to the journeys you want to take and the adventures you want to experience, comfortably and affordably.

It is a truly unique, removable overland camper and cargo system that turns your Land Rover Defender 110 5 door station wagon with 60/40 middle row seats into a comfortable, functional camper in just 30 minutes – and turns it back into your everyday Defender in less than 10!

A video from the site:

The interior space in a Grenadier is less than that in a Defender 110, but perhaps the same concept could be applied to create a Grenadier camper interior that installs in 30 minutes?

We've all seen trash bags that hang off the spare tire but if you've got jerry cans mounted externally on your Grenadier, what about one that hangs off a jerry can?

StraySystemsJerryBag2.jpg

Australian company Stray Systems says:

Most touring set ups have either a Spare Tyre or a Jerry Can on the back. Spare Tyre Bags are a dime a dozen, but Jerry Can bags? Well they dont exist until now. J1-A Jerry Can Bag utilises your Jerry Can, creating extra storage external to your vehicle.

Ideal for carrying stinky trash or wet and dirty gear, the J1-A securely attaches to all Jerry Cans making use of normally wasted space. Extensively tested in the brutal Australian outback for over 12 months, we are confident in this systems simplicity and longevity. Smaller than our TB-1 Spare Tyre Bag, it comes in at 25L of volume, which is 25% more capacity than the jerry can it attaches to.

Also unusual and interesting is the way the small cans are strapped to the top of the jerry cans:

If you don't have an externally mounted jerry can, the Grenadier has several options for hanging trash/recycling/gear bags - the spare and the ladder:

Both of the above bags are available from Overland Outfitters: https://www.overland-outfitters.com/ineos-grenadier.html#/

It seems that there's an app for everything these days (from Land Rover Owner magazine)...

Winch-App.jpg

I did a little searching and it turns out there are a bunch of similar apps, here's one I came across:

Winch-Calc.jpg

I guess if you're extremely stuck, something like this could be useful to calculate the best way to winch out. I'll have to give one of them a try, although I must not be trying hard enough - the few times I've been stuck extraction has been pretty straightforward.

Different places to mount things... this expedition-equipped Series Land Rover has jerry cans mounted on the rear body. Maybe that's a better place than mounting them on the swinging tailgate/rear door? It does require relocating the tail lights and the license plate but it should be a stronger place to mount them.

Because of the configuration and construction of the rear of the Grenadier, this probably won't work on a Grenadier (as if you'd even want to?)

Not Land Rover ideas, but some Chinese ideas maybe worth looking at...

If I told you this was a photo of the center console of an upcoming 4x4, you might say they stole the idea from the Grenadier.

BAIC-BJ81-10.jpg

I don't know if they got the idea from the Grenadier or not, but the photo shows the center console of a BJ81 prototype concept from Chinese company BAIC.

BAIC-BJ81.jpg

BAIC-BJ81-4.jpg

It does have some features worth looking at that could be adapted to many offroad vehicles. For example, the rack on the hood:

BAIC-BJ81-7.jpg

One feature I don't understand are these tubes on the front bumper, what is their purpose? Firing mortar shells?

BAIC-BJ81-6.jpg

Door armor, this would be easy to adapt to the Grenadier's Utility Belt:

BAIC-BJ81-2.jpg

Check out the side steps and integrated fender flares which are apparently strong enough to stand on and serve as steps to access the roof rack. Seems like a very useful idea, I like this one:

BAIC-BJ81-4.jpg

The snorkel is hinged, compare this photo to the side view above:

BAIC-BJ81-11.jpg

Not sure if this is going to be a production vehicle and if so it is it's unlikely we'd be able to buy one in the U.S., but it does have a few interesting features to consider.

I came across this in a Land Rover group on Facebook. The poster was asking what size (narrow) spare people were mounting to their hood.

HoodSpareSize.jpg

The Grenadier hood comes up closer to the windshield than the Land Rover hood, so even a skinny spare might be too much in the line of vision, but I'm wondering if a narrow wheel could be found with the Grenadier's 6x130 bolt circle and a "pizza cutter" tire installed on it and mount it on the hood. When doing expedition travel in my Jeeps, I often carried two spares; when I drove to Deadhorse in North Alaska on the Dalton Highway I carried three spares because of the high risk of tire damage due to metal objects falling off the oil field trucks on the 250-mile unpaved portion of the Dalton from Coldfoot Camp up to Deadhorse. I took this photo one the way north to Coldfoot Camp, one of the spares is on the roof, one is inside and one is in the normal place on the back.

ArcticCircle2.jpg

I'd like to carry a second spare on some of my Grenadier adventures, and probably will carry one on the roof rack like I have always done on many expeditions with the Jeep, but I'm always intrigued by the idea of carrying a space on the hood.

From Land Rover Magazine - and this does seem like a good idea - body-mounted rear work lights:

RearWorkLamps1.jpg

RearWorkLamps2.jpg

They seem to have an angled housing that would focus the light very nicely around the rear of the Land Rover. I checked the company's web site (https://irbdevelopments.com/) but the lights don't seem to be on the site but probably angled lights like this could be found elsewhere.

I use clamp-on lights to illuminate my kitchen, but permanently mounted lights wouldn't need to be set up each time for use so if I find angled lights like those above I might switch to them. The kitchen isn't in the Grenadier in this photo, I was just testing the lights to make sure they clamp nicely onto the door and provide illumination in the right places.
